A Bronx man has been sentenced to 75 years to life in prison for a deadly shooting outside the Umbrella Hotel in Kew Gardens that left one person dead and two others injured, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.

A Bronx gunman was sentenced Friday to 75 years to life in prison for a deadly New Year’s Day 2021 shooting at the former Umbrella Hotel in Kew Gardens that left one man dead and two others injured.

Richard Swygert, 24, was found guilty in March of second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and weapons possession charges following a three-week jury trial.

According to prosecutors and trial testimony, the incident occurred around 1:09 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2021, when Swygert and another individual entered the Umbrella Hotel on 82nd Avenue and Queens Boulevard. After encountering the three victims in the lobby, an argument broke out outside the hotel and escalated into a physical fight. Authorities said Swygert then pulled out a firearm and opened fire, fatally shooting 20-year-old Robert Deandre Williams of Rosedale multiple times. Two other victims were also struck and seriously injured during the shooting.
