Hantavirus Concerns and NYC Deputy Mayor Weigh In on Mamdani’s Budget Proposal

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — In this episode of Up Close, we examine a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship and the coordinated effort to contain its spread as passengers return to their home countries.

At least 10 cases have been confirmed, while 18 passengers were flown back to the United States and are currently under quarantine. Others suspected of infection remain in isolation.

We speak with New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Allister Martin about how serious the situation is, and also address broader public health concerns in the region, including measles.

Before that, the program focuses on what officials are calling a new era in city government—one centered on balancing ambition with fiscal responsibility.

After unveiling a budget of more than $124 billion, Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared that New York City’s fiscal crisis is over. He credited state assistance for helping close a $5.5 billion budget gap, though some analysts remain concerned about potential long-term deficits.

We also sit down with New York City First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan to discuss the city’s financial outlook moving forward.
