Tottenham Secure Survival with Hard-Fought Win Over Everton to Avoid Relegation Scare
Tottenham secured their Premier League survival on the final day of the 2025–26 season with a 1–0 win over Everton, a result that sent rivals West Ham down to the Championship.
João Palhinha’s scrappy first-half goal proved decisive in a tightly contested relegation battle that had lasted for months. The goal, which just crossed the line, eased the tension at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but nerves returned late on as results elsewhere briefly threatened Spurs’ safety.
West Ham, who beat Leeds 3–0 on the final day, were ultimately relegated despite finishing with 39 points — reportedly the joint-highest total ever recorded by a relegated side since 2010–11. It marks their first drop to the second tier since 2012.
Heading into the decisive fixtures, Tottenham knew they would only be relegated if they lost at home while West Ham won across London. When West Ham went ahead late in their match, pressure mounted in north London, but Spurs held firm.
A late Everton push tested Spurs’ resolve, but they survived nine minutes of stoppage time thanks in part to a crucial save from Antonín Kinsky.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi praised his side’s resilience after the match, telling the BBC: “I’m very happy and elated for the performance of my players. They showed they are good people and top players. We played maybe the best game in my time here.”
He also referenced the broader relegation picture, adding a pointed remark about Everton’s opponents in the final round.
The result capped a turbulent season for Tottenham. They managed just three home league wins all campaign and endured managerial upheaval, with Thomas Frank sacked early in the season and replaced by Igor Tudor, whose brief 44-day spell failed to turn results around.
De Zerbi’s arrival at the end of March sparked a late revival, with Spurs collecting 11 points from their final six matches to narrowly avoid the drop.
Spurs defender Micky van de Ven admitted the situation was far from ideal, telling the BBC: “It is unacceptable that the last game we played this season we play for relegation. It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day, but we did it and that is what is important.”
